Should I take the plunge?

I've been setup here in my corner of the universe for a about a year and half now and I'm wondering I should go for it and register the domain?

I'm able to do plenty with the free space that Google has provided me with in this time but I wonder if I could take this place to new heights and get some recognition if I were to purchase it. But I'm not sure exactly I would get out of registration.

To anyone reading this that has registered their domain and gone up from free spaces what more do you get out of it?

Uh, yeah!
Why do you even have to ask?

OK, to clarify...
You post enough, you have enough ideas and insight, and internet presence, to generate traffic. I have ads on several of my sites, which covers the cost of having them entirely if nothing else. With your own site and domain you have more control of design, purpose, etc...
I never had a free site myself, as I started doing biz sites for others and just used my extra space for hobby sites.
However, having my own domains has never done me wrong.
Go for it!

Now about the ads. Do you have control over what types of ads show? The reason I ask is because I've seen sites have problems with offensive ads appearing in their space. Even if I can't 100% prevent the offensive ads I at least want to be able to remove them easily.

As you know, I just did it with ethecofem. It was a very reasonable $14.97/yr, and N promises to show me all of the wonderful possibilities...

By chance what hosting service did you use?

April: "It was a very reasonable $14.97/yr"

$8:59/year at nearlyfreespeech.com for the most popular TLDs

BUT: You pay extra if you want DNS and/or email forwarding (probably included in the price with your $14.97 registration)

Me: "$8:59/year at nearlyfreespeech.com for the most popular TLDs"

nearlyfreespeech.NET. Beg pardon.

Zobabe: "With your own site and domain you have more control of design, purpose, etc..."

Total control of your own site, is one of the two big benefits: The other is freedom from any particular hosting provider. I absolutely love nearlyfreespeech.net as a hosting provider, but if they ever turned evil, I could easily move my blog somewhere else.

April, NFSN is probably the best hosting provider for technically competent people (or those with technically competent people to help them), as well as the cheapest for low-traffic sites. If N doesn't know about it, get him to have a look. I have no connection with them other than as a very satisfied customer.

I just use google ads, but you can easily block any ads you don't like. There are also a lot of new services doing basically the same thing. So you just add their code, any ad you don't like you black-list.
I've been using Alwaiz.com for a long time for my own hosting, but I host a lot of sites besides my own. Alwaiz has good customer service, and is willing to negotiate with you (you can get a way better deal than what is offered on their site if you contact them).
Plus they offer full cpanel, and easy wordpress installation.

I also use Artisteer to create wordpress themes. It costs about $40. Hey, I'll make you a theme if you like... ;-)

Thanks for the offer.
